Troubleshooting Your Trimlight System

As is with all technology, some systems require periodic maintenance.

Because each Trimlight system is unique (and not built in a factory), it can experience hiccups that may require some tweaking from a technician to ensure proper voltage.

Common Issues and Questions

  • Unplug the green block on top of the Edge controller. Leave the controller unplugged for one minute.

Unplug the green block on top of the Edge controller.

Leave the controller unplugged for 30 seconds to 1 minute. After this process is complete, please also force close the app and restart the app to refresh the connection to the controller to the network.

  • Timer mode was not initiated, reopen the app, switch to timer mode, and exit.

Open up your Trimlight App and go to the settings page, Put it in timer mode, reopen the app and switch it to timer mode, then exit.

  • If you're having issues connecting it could be a few minor things. Learn more below on getting your system up and running with these steps.

Connection Failures can be a few things. If a connection failure happens during the initial setup of the controller to the network, please ensure the Wi-Fi network is correct, the Wi-Fi password is correct, and the signal strength of the network at the location of the Trimlight controller is strong. Also, it is also good practice to also reset your wifi router and possible modem in these scenarios to ensure that all devices are properly refreshed.

  • If the Trimlight app is failing to sync data waking the controller up for the router to detect is your first step.

At times select Wi-Fi routers may not recognize the dormant controller on its network.

Waking up the controller so your network can spot it is a great 1st step. To do this, access the controller and push the + button or the - button a few times. These buttons are to allow a user to manually cycle through the saved library patterns to the device. By pushing these buttons, they will turn the lights on manually to a selected saved pattern and hopefully refresh the list in your router of available connected devices.

If this step does not stop the "Failing to Sync Data", Please reset your home wifi router and modem to ensure the connection is refreshed. If that does not solve the issue, please try "adding the device a 2nd time to the account". Similar to the steps you did originally when adding the controller to your network.

  • If your Trimlight controller says it's offline, Power or Wi-Fi connection could be the culprit.

If your Trimlight controller says it's offline, that could mean that the router can not see the controller on it's network. The following are potential causes to this.

There is no power going to the controller:

Please look for any of the indicator lights on the controller to whether the power is correctly working on the controller. If there are no lights on the unit, please check to ensure proper power is going to the outlet in which the Trimlight system is plugged into. If there is power at the outlet but the lights are still not illuminated, please contact your original local dealer for a service call by a technician.

Your Wifi router has lost connection to the controller:

Depending on your type of router will depend on it's ability to remember the controller or connect to it. Please reset your Wi-Fi router and modem, and restart your Trimlight Mobile App to refresh the software. If this task does not work, please try adding the device again to your network in the same manner you originally added the controller to your network.  If this final step does not work, please contact your original local dealer for a service call by a technician.

  • Unplug the unit, then press and hold both the plus (+) and minus (-) buttons while doing this replug the unit in.

  • If your system is frozen or not responding, perform a soft reboot by disconnecting the power from the unit for 30 seconds before reconnecting the power.

    Option #1 SOFT REBOOT:

Perform a soft reboot by disconnecting the power from the unit for 30 seconds before reconnecting the power.

This can be done by either (A) Unplugging the system in full from the wall outlet and replacing the plug in the outlet after 30 seconds or (B) you can squeeze the GREEN terminal labeled VCC-GND and pulling it away from the controller for 30 seconds and then re-inserting it back into the controller. Once one of these actions has been performed, allow the system to boot up which may take several minutes, and try again.

    Option #2 NETWORK RECONNECT:

Ensure the light on the controller is still set to the proper connection that was previously set up on your system. If you were using the Trimlight signal to connect, the light should be blue and labeled “Wifi Broadcasting”. If the system was previously connected to the local wifi network, the light should be Green where it is labeled “Network Connected”.

If either of these are not correct based on your previous setup, quickly click the STA/AP button until the light returns to the correct setting. Manually running the system through the BLUE light (Wifi Broadcasting) mode is a temporary fix for operating if the controller is not finding the system through the
    network.

    Option #3 FACTORY RESET:

To perform this function, Unplug the unit and then press and hold the
“+” and “-” buttons while restoring power to the unit. Allow the unit to reboot properly and then go through the initial steps to set up the controller as shown in this manual.

If connectivity is not found from the first 2 options and the authorized dealer is unable to help during a phone support call thelast optionis for a Factory Reset. This function will delete all previous set memory and return the unit back to the original factory settings.

  • The Music Feature requires two items that are vital. 1. On Local Connection 2. App permissions Granted.

When a user first opens the app. Make sure that your main connection bubble for the controller is showing "LOCAL". If you only see it saying "ONLINE", the music function will not work. The ability for the controller to connect to local is based on how your local wifi network is allowing the controller to connect. This is not something that can be fixed by Trimlight as it is based on the type of wifi router in which you use. If you have multiple access points in the home, walk towards the controller with your mobile device to ensure that it connects directly to the original pairing access point.

If the connection is in ONLINE when you enter the controller (PINK Bubble Showing here). Once you open the music portion of the app. The app will show a prompt like the following meaning that you need to be connected on a LOCAL Connection for it to work properly.

If fully confirmed that you are on the LOCAL connection (Blue Bubble Showing above). Once you open the music portion of the app. If the app shows the following "Permission Denied" prompt. This means that not all permissions were granted when originally setting up the app.

You may need to go into the settings of your mobile device to find all the "permissions" for the Trimlight Edge app and ensure that all are properly turned on. The microphone permission needs to be allowed. Shown below on an iPhone device.

If all of these items are corrected. The music feature should work properly when opening the app. For added information regarding using the music feature. Go to the How To Instructional videos

  • This happens periodically if there is a bad connection in the wire or a faulty light.  If we were your original installer, please take a picture or video and email it to us so we can diagnose the issue.  It’s possible we may be able to fix it over the phone or, if not, we may need to schedule a service call.

  • The first step is to ensure the Trimlight controller in the box has an illuminated BLUE light near the VCC and GND terminals. If the blue light is not on, push the APA/STA button several times until the light is solid blue.  If the light does not change during this process, unplug the system and wait 20 seconds and plug it back in to give the system a soft reboot.  Repeat the previous steps until the light is blue.

  • A few things could be happening. Make sure the signal is a 2.4G Wi-Fi signal that you are connecting trying to pair with.  A 5G network will not pair with our controller. You may have a weak home network signal out where the controller is located.  Use a booster to boost the signal or use the Trimlight signal alone.  Unfortunately, some routers have a strict protocol that won’t allow a Trimlight system to pair with it.  In these instances, we suggest using the Trimlight signal.

  • This can be common on initial connections and in most applications, is a simple fix.  If the light on the controller is still flashing green, unplug the system and plug it back in performing a soft reboot. The light should go to solid green.

Force close the app on the mobile device and reboot the device for a fresh operating system. Confirm the device is connected to the 2.4G Wi-Fi signal that was originally connected to the controller. Re-open the app and re-populate the list of available devices.  Do not push +Add device for a second time.  Allow 3-4 swipe downs until the controller name populates.

If the previous actions were still unsuccessful, it looks like your router may not be compatible with the system as is and you will need to use the Trimlight Wi-Fi Signal to control the lights. Push the AP/STA button until the light is blue to continue connecting through the Trimlight Network only.

  • Every Trimlight controller comes preset as named Trimlight.  Once you connect to the correct controller you are wanting to control, go into the device menu page and PUSH AND HOLD on the name Trimlight.  It will ask you to rename the lights. At this stage, name the lights whatever you would like to differentiate between neighboring controllers. Make sure to use no spaces or symbols.  Once this is completed, the Trimlight system will now broadcast only the name that you gave it.  To be sneaky, name it something no one would guess is your lighting system.
